Summary

Engineering leader who builds and grows teams that ship reliable software in high-stakes domains. Three years leading engineering for one of the largest global giving platforms on AWS. Earlier, as Chief Architect at Sabre, managed a team of architects and shaped technical direction across a portfolio driving roughly 150 products. I lead through influence and demonstrated value, develop engineers into their next role, and carry teams through hard technical problems without burning them out. Thirty years hands-on, from embedded C to cloud, so my technical calls are credible. I am trained in conflict resolution and mediation, so I’m comfortable in uncomfortable conversations and understand how to leave space for healthy disagreement. My job is to make the team effective, not to be the smartest person in the room.

Leadership

  • Building, growing, and retaining engineering teams
  • Mentorship, role definition, and career development
  • Technical strategy, architecture direction, and roadmap ownership
  • Cross-functional delivery and stakeholder management
  • Legacy modernization and technical-debt reduction
  • Remote-first team leadership
  • Facilitative mediation and conflict resolution

Experience

GlobalGiving — Engineering Leadership (AWS platform) · 2018-2025 One of the largest global crowdfunding platforms, connecting nonprofits and donors in nearly every country. Grew from senior engineer to Director, then returned post-tenure as a trusted consultant.

  • Director of Engineering (2021-2024): Led the engineering team for the platform. Owned delivery, architecture direction, and team health. Led the team through scaling, reliability, and technical-debt work while protecting against burnout, and stayed close enough to the code to make credible calls and mentor engineers directly.
  • Consulting Engineer (2024-2025): Invited back to drive modernization and compliance work and reinforce engineering best practices.
  • Senior Software Engineer (2018-2021): Hands-on development and architecture across the AWS platform before stepping into leadership.

Sabre Holdings — Chief Architect, Airline Solutions · 2007-2008 Provided technical leadership for the application architects of a global airline-software organization.

  • Directly managed 5 architects and held mentorship and oversight for 12+ product-team architects who drove roughly 150 products.
  • Defined the technical roles and career-development plans for the organization.
  • Drove technology adoption and standards through influence, collaboration, and demonstrated value rather than mandate, without impeding tight delivery deadlines.

Sun Microsystems — Senior Java Architect / Enterprise RFID Architect · 2001-2006

  • Methodology and architecture coach across project lifecycles; mentored client teams on design, patterns, and delivery.
  • Lead architect through the full lifecycle of major launches, including a complete re-architecture of one of the highest-value travel sites in the world.
  • Contributed to the field of RFID through Sun’s RFID technology incubator as a recognized subject-matter expert.

ITA Software (Google) — Customer Relationship Manager · 2006

  • Primary point of contact for the company’s largest customer. Defined goals, tracked execution and delivery, and negotiated internal and external priorities across a matrix organization.

AJA Video Systems — Senior Staff Engineer · 2008-2015 Senior individual contributor. Embedded C++ on Linux-based video capture and processing hardware. Kept deep hands-on skills sharp between leadership roles.

Earlier

  • Bright Canopy (Founder): Founded a startup delivering rich virtual worlds in the browser; acquired into the Frame (now Nutanix) product portfolio.
  • Micro Beef Technologies: Embedded C control systems for cattle feedyards deployed at 65 sites. (AgTech.)
  • Bureau of Reclamation (via Anteon): SCADA control systems for Imperial Dam and the Lower Colorado River.

Still Hands-On

Cloud cost-audit CLI (in development): concurrent multi-region AWS scanning under a strictly read-only IAM policy. I keep building so I stay current with the stack my teams work in.

Technical Proficiency

Java, C, C++, Python, Bash, JavaScript, TypeScript/React · AWS (EC2, RDS, DynamoDB, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, CloudFront, S3, Step Functions, CloudFormation) · Docker, Redis, Linux
